I love the internet and the opportunities is gives us to send meaningful and beautiful mail. I think it is amazing that so many of us use this technology to keep things like letters alive. I know I wouldn't send half of the amount of mail I do if I didn't have websites like Sendsomething, Postcrossing, Swap-Bot and, of course, other mail blogs.
The Missive Maven has a wonderful blog and she posts about a lot of mail related things that I don't think I would find by myself. Recently she posted about an interesting mail challenge (which she found about through Postmuse's tweets). There is a post office in Vermont that may be facing closure next year if it doesn't bring in enough revenue or mail volume. Unless you live in Vermont and want to use that post office exclusively, most of us cannot help the revenue side. Fortunately Jane Davies posted about what we can do to help.
In order to increase the volume of mail that wee Vermont post office handles, Jane is asking people to send her an art postcard. In return, she will send you a handmade postcard. Pretty good deal, right? Make a fun postcard, send it her way, help a post office and get a postcard in return
I also want to help out a bit more. For every comment I receive on this post, I will send one additional postcard. Let me know why you love mail or post offices, tell me about your favorite post office or just say hello.
I saw MM's call for postcards and sent one off straight away. I hope Ms. Davies receives a flood of cards!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I am probably going to send a few. I can't wait to see the postcards she receives!
DeleteI love this little project and hope Jane Davies is overwhelmed with mail. She's the recipient of my first attempt at a mail art postcard. I hope she survives! I'll send more, too. As for why I love mail, that's simple - it's beautiful and comforting as long as it isn't a bill. ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt is such a nice project! It seems that Jane has received a lot of postcards so far; have you checked out her Facebook album dedicated to the postcards?
DeleteBeautiful and comforting is right!
That is dreadful news! When I live in Blackwood, NJ, there was a smallish post office just down the street from my house (i could easily walk to and from in half an hour). Some of the counter ladies got to know me because I was always sending so many holiday cards, birthday cards, or just plain postcards. I really miss the staff there! I mean, I like the staff I deal with at Canada Post now, but.. it just isn't the same. They don't know me like the folks from my home town :)
ReplyDeleteI would like to help out by sending a postcard as well!
What a nice story :) I feel like if I went to the post offices often around here, the clerks would definitely get to know me. Everything is so small in Rhode Island :p
DeleteI hope you send a postcard!
Tara, thanks so much for the shout-out, and your own great blog posts. I appreciate your kind words, and I'm so glad to see you not only spreading the word, but sending so many postcards of your own - you rock!
ReplyDeleteOn another note, stay safe in our little Rhode Island blizzard...
Thank you! I love your blog, I think I have been following since 2010 :)
DeleteStay safe and warm yourself! This will be the most snow I have ever seen. I am excited.
